Purpose

A Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, uses liposuction to remove fat from areas such as the abdomen, flanks, or back and transfers a portion of that fat to the buttocks to add volume and improve shape. It is a serious surgical procedure. At Peak Plastic Surgery Center in Denver, Dr. Eric Barker reviews anatomy, available donor fat, skin quality, health history, and safety considerations before recommending whether a BBL is appropriate.

Best fit

Candidates typically want more buttock volume or a rounder, more balanced contour, have enough donor fat to transfer, are near a stable weight, and are in good overall health. Patients with very little body fat may not have enough to harvest, and patients with significant loose skin may need a different plan. Every recommendation is confirmed during a private consultation in Denver after health history, anatomy, goals, timing, and recovery expectations are reviewed.

Patients with very little body fat may not have enough to harvest, and patients with significant loose skin may need a different plan. Technique and Options

The procedure has two parts: liposuction to harvest fat from donor areas, then processing and transfer of that fat into the buttocks. Current safety guidance from plastic surgery societies calls for fat to be placed only in the tissue above the muscle, never into the gluteal muscle. The amount transferred depends on available donor fat, the tissue's capacity, and the shape being planned. A portion of transferred fat does not survive, which is factored into the plan. How placement is planned and monitored for your procedure is reviewed during consultation.

Recovery Timeline

Recovery involves both the liposuction donor areas and the buttocks. Sitting or lying directly on the buttocks is limited for a period after surgery so the transferred fat is not compressed while it establishes a blood supply; a cushion or modified position is used when sitting is unavoidable. Compression garments are worn over the donor areas. Swelling settles over weeks to months, and the final shape reflects the fat that survives. Timelines for sitting, driving, work, and exercise are set for each patient at follow-up visits.

Cost and Financing

Cost depends on the number of liposuction areas, the amount of fat transferred, surgical time, anesthesia, and facility needs. Pricing is confirmed during your consultation, and flexible financing options are available (subject to credit approval).

Procedure FAQ

Clear answers before consultation.

These questions and answers are here to help you prepare for your consultation. Individual results vary, and any recommendation is made after an in-person evaluation.

Is a Brazilian butt lift safe?

A BBL is a serious surgical procedure with real risks, including risks specific to fat transfer. Plastic surgery safety guidance focuses on fat placement depth: fat should be placed only in the tissue above the muscle, not into it. Risks, the surgical setting, and how the procedure is planned for you are reviewed in detail during consultation, and the decision to proceed is yours after that review.

Where does the fat come from?

Fat is harvested with liposuction from areas that have enough to spare, commonly the abdomen, flanks, lower back, or thighs. Contouring those donor areas is part of the result, which is why a BBL is often described as two procedures in one.

How much of the transferred fat stays?

Not all of it. A portion of transferred fat is reabsorbed in the first months after surgery, and the amount that remains varies from patient to patient. The transfer is planned with this in mind, and realistic expectations are reviewed during consultation. Individual results vary.

Can I have a BBL if I am thin?

Patients with very little body fat may not have enough to transfer for a meaningful change. Consultation reviews donor areas and whether a BBL, a different contouring plan, or no surgery is the right recommendation.

How long before I can sit normally?

Direct pressure on the buttocks is limited for a period after surgery, and a cushion or modified sitting position is used when sitting is unavoidable. The exact timeline depends on your procedure and healing and is set at your follow-up visits.
