About Sciton® BBL

The skin is one of the first signs of aging as it is commonly affected by unwanted pigmentation, sun spots, wrinkles, veins, and overall dullness. While nothing can truly prevent or reverse aging, we do have several tools that can slow the process and help correct damage that has already been done. Peak Plastic Surgery Center is pleased to offer BBL (Broad Band Light) the most powerful IPL (intense pulsed light) device on the market. BBL helps to remove brown spots, even out skin texture, reduce the appearance of veins, and erase underlying sun damage. BBL has been shown to take years off of your complexion and improve overall skin health.

What is BBL (Broad Band Light)?

Many people have heard of the term IPL when talking about skin care treatments. BBL is the most cutting-edge technology that utilizes short blasts of high-intensity light to repair the DNA in the skin that produces a younger and more even complexion. Light is delivered into the surface of the skin and heat is absorbed allowing the cells to generate new collagen within the skin. Photothermal energy eliminates smaller vessels that lead to redness and reduce melanin in unwanted sun spots. A ten year study conducted at Stanford University revealed that consistent BBL treatments can alter the gene expression responsible for aging.

Who is a candidate for BBL?

Candidates for BBL should attend a consultation with Peak Plastic Surgery Center for a proper skin assessment and evaluation before moving forward. Broad Band Light is ideal for individuals with any skin type who are concerned with age spots, sun damage, redness, and small vessels. Please inform our team if you are pregnant or are taking medications that make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Candidates must avoid sun exposure prior to treatment and should be willing to follow any post-treatment instructions as provided.

What Does Maintenance Look Like?

Each patient is different.

What can I expect during my appointment?

Our providers will perform a thorough skin analysis to determine if BBL is the right treatment for you. Several questions will be asked about your medical history and a plan will be made. It is best to be off of retinols and avoid excessive sun exposure one week prior to your treatment. Typically numbing is not needed for BBL and can sometimes create more redness on the skin which the laser targets as pigment. Patients will be able to use a state-of-the-art Zimmer chiller that blows cold air onto the skin. Most patients relate the sensation to a rubber band snapping the skin. Once the treatment is completed there is little to no discomfort at all. Some patients might experience a slight “sun burn” sensation that resolves in 1-2 days. The BBL treatment is entirely customizable to your needs. Different filters will be used to target redness, sun damage, acne, and wrinkle repair. Following the procedure, it is best to avoid direct sun exposure for 7 days and follow a gently skin care routine. Patients might experience slight darkening of sun spots that look like pepper flakes, these will flake off over the next several days. As there is no downtime, sunscreen and makeup can be applied directly following the treatment.
