Under Eye Filler

Under eye filler is a common reason for consultation at Peak Plastic Surgery Center as this is one of the first signs of aging on the face.

There are several factors that contribute to the appearance of aging under the eyes. Dark circles, wrinkles, puffiness, and pigmentation can all create the appearance of tiredness or stress. Causes of dark circles are often complex and need to be thoroughly evaluated by your provider. They could be the result of blood vessels under the eye, a loss of collagen and bony support, or even genetic make-up.
Determining if a patient is a good candidate for under eye filler is important as adding filler to the wrong patient may actually worsen the problem. Under eye filler is best performed for patients with hollowing under the eye rather than puffiness or excess volume. Often times under eye filler is best paired with cheek support so that the underlying structures are restored prior to treating the tear troughs themselves.

What Filler Is Used Under The Eyes?

While product selection is important for all areas of the face, it is the most complex for under the eyes as this skin is so thin and delicate. Restylane-L is commonly used under the eyes as it contains a perfect blend of properties that allow for volumization without attracting too much water. Peak Plastic Surgery Center only uses biodegradable hyaluronic acid fillers in order to uphold the highest safety standards while providing excellent results.

What Does Maintenance Look Like?

Under eye filler results will be seen immediately but improve over several days. In some cases, more than one syringe will be necessary for correction and will be spaced a few weeks apart. Since under eyes are often treated with a multi-dimensional approach, a different filler may be placed along the supporting cheek structure than the one placed directly into the tear trough. Under eye filler typically lasts 6-12 months while cheek filler tends to last 12-18 months.

What Can I Expect During My Appointment?

A thorough consultation will be performed by our Physician Assistant and a customized treatment plan will be discussed. Cheek filler is often performed first as this will provide the necessary anatomical support for the tear trough and reduce the amount of filler needed under the eye. Under eye filler is typically placed using a cannula which allows for safe placement of the product while reducing bruising and discomfort. Numbing cream can be applied but typically is not needed as there are minimal injection points and the filler itself contains lidocaine.

The treatment may take around 30 minutes and results will be seen immediately. As hyaluronic acid attracts water, the filler will improve over time and create a more contoured even appearance. Over the next several days the filler may swell and takes approximately 2 weeks to see full results and symmetry. It is recommended to avoid alcohol, salty foods, makeup, and exercise for 24 hours following the procedure. While this area is extremely delicate and prone to swelling, it is recommended to make an appointment 2 weeks prior to any important event or vacation.
