Smile Line Rejuvenation

A common reason for filler consultations is addressing laugh or smile lines on the sides of the mouth and nose. As the skin ages it loses collagen and volume throughout the face.

One of the first signs of this is deepening of the nasolabial folds and marionette lines. Although this is typically the first sign, it is usually also caused by loss of volume in the cheeks and upper portions of the face. In some patients, adding volume into the cheeks can help restore the structural support needed to improve the lines in the lower face.
Once balance is restored to the bony structure, smaller amounts of filler can be used directly in the nasolabial and marionette lines to build collagen and reduce the signs of aging. Most faces have a degree of asymmetry and wrinkles may be more noticeable on one side versus the other. Sleeping position can also affect one side more than the other.

What Filler is
Used for Smile Lines?

Since these lines are typically more present with animation, it is important to select a filler that moves naturally with the face. Restylane Defyne, Restylane Refyne, and Juvederm Ultra Plus are all excellent choices for this area. It is important to remember that even babies have nasolabial folds so completely erasing them can create a puffy and unnatural appearance. Peak Plastic Surgery Center prides ourselves in creating natural results that create a youthful appearance.

What Does Maintenance Look Like?

Results will be seen immediately after the procedure. If necessary, additional sessions may be required to obtain optimal results. Improvement is typically seen for 6-12 months and maintenance doses with smaller amount of filler may be performed to extend its longevity.

What Can I Expect During My Appointment?

After a thorough consultation with our Physician Assistant, a customized treatment plan will be made to address the smile lines. Numbing cream may be applied to the area but the product already contains lidocaine which makes the procedure nearly painless. The treatment may take around 30 minutes and partial results will be seen immediately. As hyaluronic acid attracts water, the filler will improve over time and create a more evened out appearance. Over the next several days the filler may swell and takes approximately 2 weeks to see full results and symmetry. It is recommended to avoid alcohol, salty foods, makeup, and exercise for 24 hours following the procedure.
